Assembled Assist uses Redaction via Amazon Comprehend to redact PII. Below are specifics on what Amazon Comprehend is and how it works with Assembled Assist.
What is Amazon Comprehend?
Amazon Comprehend is a security vendor product that anonymizes sensitive data that is built by Amazon. As a part of AWS, this product prioritizes safety and compliance as first class offerings. In particular, their Trust and Safety feature “can mask upto 22 universal PII entities like address, age, credit card number etc. and up to 14 country specific entities like US social security number, CA health number, Passport number etc.”
How does Assembled Assist use Amazon Comprehend?
We leverage Amazon Comprehend’s Trust and Safety feature to detect Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and remove this from any user text that is stored on our servers. This also means that no PII will be sent to our downstream vendors, like OpenAI and Anthropic.

How does Amazon Comprehend affect Assist’s performance?
Unfortunately, enabling Amazon Comprehend will decrease Assist’s ability to answer questions effectively. This occurs because some potentially important information will be removed from Assist’s question context, like name, email, or an order identifier. When enabled, Assist will only be able to answer general questions and his customized emails will not be personalized to a user’s past history.
How do I enable PII Redaction?
