Setting a template's time zone to account for daylight savings Kaytlin Louton January 17, 2024 16:54 Updated What is daylight savings? Check out this article to learn more about daylight saving time and why it matters when you use Assembled. How does daylight saving time affect my templates? In order to explain templates and how they are affected by daylight saving time, I'm going to use Genevieve as an example. Creating a template When you create a template, that template will be automatically saved in your time zone. In this example, Genevieve is based in San Francisco, so her template is saved in the America/Los Angeles time zone. Applying the template Genevieve manages a support team that is based both in San Francisco and Dublin. Most of her customers are in California, so her team's business hours are 6 AM to 6 PM America/Los Angeles. Because San Francisco and Dublin adjust to daylight saving time on different dates, Genevieve's team in Dublin will notice a switch in their scheduled work hours when she applies her weekly template. For example, the week before spring forward Kaytlin (in SF) will start work at 7 AM America/Los Angeles and Rick (in Dublin) will start at 2 PM Europe/Dublin time. When Genevieve applies the same template the following week, after spring forward, Rick and Kaytlin's schedules will look like this. Kaytlin will still start at 7 AM because the template is in her time zone. However, Rick's start time will now be 1 PM Europe/Dublin time. Note: In both weeks, before and after spring forward, Rick's start time is 6 AM America/Los Angeles. Because the template is in America/Los Angeles time zone, teammates in other time zones will shift their schedules to match the hours in the time zone of the template. When should teams pay attention to time zones on templates? When you're creating a template that includes teammates in more than one time zone, it is smart to think through how you want the schedules of teammates in different time zones to change during/after the daylight saving adjustment. It may be helpful to create separate templates with separate time zones for global teams if you do not want your team to shift hours (like Rick did above).
